Flukes of Juneau (Part 1)
Showcasing the uniqueness of whale, dolphin, & porpoise tails:
Whale | Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata)
Dolphin | Orca or Killer Whale (Orcinus orca)
Porpoise | Dall’s Porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli) & Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)
Dolphin Vs. Porpoise
Showcasing the morphological differences between dolphins & porpoises:
Body Size: Dolphins generally have larger, more elongated bodies than porpoise, with porpoise being quite petite in comparison to most dolphin species. (There are, however, exceptions!)
Beak: Dolphins generally have elongated snouts, or “beaks,” whereas porpoise have a shortened, blunt beak. (Again, you will find exceptions…)
Teeth: When in doubt, check those pearly whites! Dolphins have cone-shaped teeth, whereas porpoise have spade-shaped teeth.
